Some perfume houses do not start with an abstract concept, but with the soil, the salt, and the orchards of the Italian coast. At Scentissime, we have curated Abaton for its unique ability to transform a forgotten treasure of Italian heritage—the Chinotto—into a collection of niche fragrances. Founded in Savona by Marco Abaton, the brand does more than create fragrances; it works to preserve an olfactory culture where every essence tells the story of the Ligurian land and the Mediterranean breeze.
This artistic approach relies on the meticulous extraction of blossoms and fruits, capturing the singular vibration of a citrus fruit far more complex than a simple bitter orange. By collaborating with local artisans, Abaton offers a vision of luxury that prioritizes rarity and storytelling. It is a signature perfumery that moves away from industrial codes to offer a sensory experience steeped in history and light. Explore the world of Abaton fragrances in our boutique.
The word Abaton comes from the Greek and designates a niche in the temple, an exclusive place and space reserved for pilgrims. For the brand, it embodies a journey guided by curiosity to discover and offer masterpieces of high quality, refinement and originality.
Abaton has concentrated its creative resources on the study, production, selection and distribution of products representing artisanal excellence with unique elements linked to history, raw materials or working techniques. Tradition and innovation combined, with the aim of studying new formulations while minimizing environmental impact.
From a small citrus fruit comes great excellence.
Three unique fragrances, linked by a precious element: the chinotto fruit. A citrus plant with a long history: imported from China by a Savona sailor in 1500, it was considered an amulet on ships to combat scurvy and give sailors strength and vigor.
Its cultivation spread to the city of Savona, sold mainly as medicine until 1800, when processing into candied fruit and jam began. By 1930, the drink had become a cult phenomenon.
Today, chinotto is an icon of vintage originality, proudly Italian, in the food, cosmetics, tourism and art sectors... a beautiful, constantly evolving story to discover.
The Abaton brand was born in Italy and grew in the United States, becoming a landmark for fragrance lovers and perfume designers alike. Marco Abaton, passionate about chinotto and artistic perfumery, had the idea of capturing the fragrance of all facets of this extraordinary citrus fruit, using both flowers and fruit, whether green or ripe. Abaton promotes the valorization of local traditions, history and products, and wishes to recall its city, Savona, by creating unique fragrances that bring out the olfactory notes of Chinotto and the style of the wearer.

Over 300 years ago, the Chinotto plant was brought from China to Savona by a Savonese sailor. The unique climate created by the proximity of mountains and sea made Savona the perfect environment for the plant's growth, and this charming Italian town became its new home. Chinotto flowers are slowly harvested, and a patient wait for the most beautiful petals from four harvests creates an inimitable fragrance. The plant's bitter citrus became highly prized by sailors, who believed it was an amulet that protected them from disease and danger on the high seas. The flowers of the Chinotto plant are abundant and delicately scented, and the leaves and rind of the fruit contain oils often used in fine perfumery and cosmetics. The citrus fruit is quite bitter when freshly picked, but can be transformed into delicious sweets and drinks when properly processed. Savona-born perfumer Marco Abaton has used chinotto to pay homage to his hometown, with the creation of three niche fragrances that enhance the olfactory notes of this fruit: Chinotto Gourmand is joyful and energizing, the vibrant citrus notes of ripe chinotto blended with delicate orange blossom lead to a soft, enveloping heart of vanilla and caramel for a warm, addictive finish. Chinotto Dark is a bittersweet delight. An opening of fresh citrus blended with the crisp leaves of chinotto green fruit melts into a liqueur-infused balsamic heart, while a hint of intoxicating absinthe, aromatic juniper and smoky incense provide a seductive base. Fior di Chinotto is an exclusive and extraordinary essence crafted with care and expertise.
