Hervé Mathieu-Chaty is one of the leading experts in niche perfumery. He is the one who selects the brands and fragrances you find on SCENTISSIME. He began his career as International Director of Women’s Fragrances at CHANEL. He is the creator of the fragrance ALLURE. He was fortunate enough to receive training in olfaction and to work alongside the renowned perfumers Jacques Polge and François Demachy. He made the most of this exceptional opportunity to learn everything there is to know about ingredients, formulation techniques and extraction methods. After heading up marketing for JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER fragrances, he chose to follow his passion for “the most authentic form of perfumery” and became an independent consultant for numerous brands worldwide.
Today, Hervé Mathieu-Chaty is constantly on the lookout for the finest niche fragrances. He loves unearthing new brands, discovering bold compositions and spotting promising perfumers. His search is guided by two values: quality and sincerity. The brands he selects for SCENTISSIME offer truly original and skilfully composed fragrances, far from interchangeable scents and fleeting trends. The idea is always the same: to help you find your signature scent, one that is uniquely yours.
Q: Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
Hervé Mathieu-Chaty: I'm passionate about scents, an explorer of the senses, a bit curious about everything to do with perfume. But above all, I'm someone who likes to share. For me, each fragrance tells a story - not just a blend of notes, but a real moment to be experienced.
Q: How do you choose fragrances for SCENTISSIME?
HMC: I work very much on instinct, but also on experience. When a fragrance arrives, I let it "breathe" for a long time, observing it on the skin, trying to feel what it triggers, first in myself, then thinking about the people who might like it. It's like an intimate dialogue. I'm looking for fragrances that aren't just beautiful or well-made, but that are in tune with life, emotions and the little moments of everyday life.
Q: What advice would you give to someone new to niche perfumery?
HMC: Don't necessarily look for complexity. Sometimes, a simple note, well crafted, can tell a stronger story than a busy bouquet. Let yourself be carried away by what really speaks to you, without prejudice. And above all, take your time. Fragrance is a companion, not a competition.
Q: What's your favorite time to evaluate a fragrance?
HMC: Quiet moments, when you have time to be with yourself. In the morning, of course, when the nose is "fresh", or in the evening, as you gently close the day. That's when fragrance reveals its nuances, when it becomes almost background music to our thoughts.
Q: Is there an olfactory anecdote that's close to your heart?
HMC: Yes, once, in an old bookshop, I smelled this mingled odor of yellowed paper, leather and ink. It was a raw scent, a sui generis perfume, but so lively and captivating. It reminded me that perfume isn't just in bottles - it's everywhere, in places, in memories, in atmospheres, and also in the imaginations we carry within us.
