Founded in 1930 by Prince Murat, the Le Galion house occupies a unique place in the history of French perfumery. Its identity was cemented under the leadership of perfumer Paul Vacher, who acquired the house in 1935 and, the very following year, created Sortilège, which has become one of his iconic creations. Today, Le Galion carries on this legacy through fragrances that blend the heritage of classical perfumery with a contemporary perspective. Paul Vacher’s name is closely linked to some of the defining moments in 20th-century perfumery. At Lanvin, he collaborated with André Fraysse on the creation of Arpège. He also composed Miss Dior for Christian Dior, before continuing his work for Le Galion with fragrances such as Snob, Frac, Iris and Tubéreuse. This history bears witness to an era when French perfumery distinguished itself through its mastery of raw materials, the precision of its compositions and a rigorous approach to fragrance creation. Sortilège, created in 1936, remains one of the house’s historic signature fragrances. Its floral-aldehydic composition notably combines jasmine, rose, iris and ylang-ylang with a base of sandalwood, musk and vetiver. Other creations illustrate the diversity of Le Galion’s repertoire. Snob embodies sophisticated floral elegance, whilst Iris celebrates the flower in all its majesty within a powdery, green composition. Tubéreuse explores a creamier, more sensual facet of the white flower. Bourrasque, for its part, reinterprets the chypre family with spicy, floral and woody accents. These fragrances offer an insight into the many facets of French haute parfumerie, from grand floral bouquets to more assertive chypre compositions. Following a hiatus, Le Galion was revived in 2014 with the aim of reintroducing its historic creations and developing new compositions. The house thus continues its mission to pass on its heritage, whilst opening up its olfactory legacy to new interpretations. Its iconic bottle was redesigned in 2022 by designer Pierre Dinand, striking a balance between heritage and modernity. The collections now bring together reissues and more recent creations, crafted by various perfumers.
