The Fragrance

The atmosphere I experienced during the ceremonies held at the Basilica of Santuario Maria Santissima del Mazzaro in Mazzarino, my mother’s birthplace, where the embers of austere, clerical incense, smoldering from a laboriously swung Sunday censer, blended in an indissoluble embrace with the enveloping breezes laden with citrus, wood, and resins—which, coming from the surrounding fields, filled the Baroque naves of a church brimming with charm and mysticism.
