When Vines and Roses Share the Same Furrow: A Portrait of Lauriane Guignon

(c)DR

There’s an image that says it all about Lauriane Guignon: her hands in the soil at dawn, and selecting vials for the perfume organ in the afternoon. Far from being a metaphor, it’s her daily routine. At Mas Ricardenque, a family estate nestled in the hills above Callian in the Grasse region, Centifolia roses and Syrah vines grow side by side.

Lauriane Guignon is a winemaker, a producer of perfume plants, and a perfumer. Three professions that, for her, form a single one. She coined a word to describe it: agriparfumeure. As the founder of Cépages Parfums—a brand launched in 2024 after a decade of quiet development—she has introduced what, to my knowledge, is a unique concept to the niche perfume scene: fragrances conceived not in a trend-setting office, but from the terroir itself. From the soil, the seasons, and the agricultural calendar.

In an industry that often invokes nature without ever getting its hands dirty, Lauriane Guignon does the exact opposite—and it’s refreshing.

A story rooted in the Grasse region

The story begins over a century ago, and it smells of jasmine and morello cherries. Paul Guignon, the great-grandfather, cultivated the region’s two treasures in Grasse: flowers for perfumers and fruit for wine and spirits merchants. This dual cultivation—flowers and fruit—is woven into the family’s DNA. His son André carried on the tradition and took it a step further: he introduced winemaking to the estate and created secret vintages reserved for family and close friends.

Lauriane grew up in this world. The rhythm of the grape harvests and the blooming seasons shaped her years just as much as the school calendar. She knew the scent of the May Rose before she could even name it; she breathed in the aroma of fermenting must the way others breathe in the sea air.

Then came the turning point. In the late 1990s, the raw materials crisis in Grasse hit producers hard. Centifolia rose cultivation was moved elsewhere. Lauriane’s grandparents were forced to uproot their rose bushes. An olfactory silence settled over the family fields.

In 2014, Lauriane, barely twenty years old, decided with her father Pascal to reawaken the dormant land. They replanted the historic fields that had been left fallow. It was a gamble that many considered unreasonable. At the same time, she enrolled in a perfumery program, worked at IFF’s quality control lab in Grasse—where she studied natural raw materials using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry—and trained in fragrance creation at the GIP in Grasse. She also learned viticulture, building on the knowledge passed down by her grandfather.

This journey is anything but linear. It resembles her land: rugged, tenacious, and deeply rooted.

The Birth of Cépages Parfums

In 2024, Cépages Parfums was founded, and with the brand came the concept of “agriparfumerie,” a term Lauriane Guignon coined to describe a practice that did not exist (or no longer existed): creating a dialogue between the arts of the land and fine perfumery. Not in a metaphorical sense—where nature is invoked in a marketing brief—but in the literal sense: the perfumer who creates the fragrances is the same person who prunes the rose bushes in January, plows the fields in April, harvests the Rose de Mai at dawn, and picks the Syrah grapes in September.

This seasonal rhythm is the very structure of her creative process. The dance of the seasons on the estate dictates the timing of creation, maceration, and formulation. Nothing is forced. The raw materials set their own pace.

Lauriane also emphasizes a direct connection with raw material producers around the world. She considers them peers—growers who, like her, tend to the “source” of a fragrance’s magic. This loyalty to the producer and this emphasis on the traceability of each ingredient reposition perfumery within a short-supply-chain model reminiscent of that of independent winemakers.

Cépages Parfums is quickly gaining attention. Forbes France featured it in an article in its special luxury report in early 2025, highlighting the concept of “agriparfumerie.” The brand exhibited at Paris Perfume Week. Parfumo gave it an average rating of 9.3 out of 10: for a brand founded just two years earlier, the message is clear.

Her Vision of Perfume

Lauriane Guignon is convinced that perfume is born from the earth before rising up. This statement sums up her entire philosophy. A perfume is first and foremost a cultivation, then a creation. To date, Cépages has six creations, each crafted like a distinct vintage.

Contre-Courant kicks things off with a bold move: taking tuberose—a flower usually known for its sweet, heady scent—and presenting it in a crystalline, almost aquatic light. Top notes of thyme and juniper berries; a heart where tuberose intertwines with flowering vines; and a base of marine and musky notes. The result is delightfully unexpected: you expect opulence, but you get clarity. It’s a fragrance that evokes the Mediterranean breeze sweeping over blooming vineyards.

Muscaté plays on words. Its name evokes both Muscat and musk. The Muscat Petits Grains grape lends it a luminous sweetness, orange blossom a sunny roundness, while a vine shoot accord—composed of cypriol and cade—provides a slightly smoky, woody texture in the base, like vine branches warmed by the sun. It’s a summer evening among the vines, captured in a bottle.

The very name“Borderline”evokes a taste for the edge. A contemporary fruity chypre where the explosive top notes of blackcurrant buds, pink pepper, and citrus evoke the aroma of the Syrah grape. Vintage patchouli and oak moss establish a deep, earthy character in the base. The scent trail is both bewildering and heady in equal measure.

Taniros. Its name—a contraction of “tannic” and “rose”—says it all: to capture the very essence of the Guignon estate. A crisp, green top note reminiscent of the vineyard in spring gives way to a heart of honeyed, animalic May rose, supported by the nobility of cedar. It is perhaps the most personal fragrance in the line, the one into which Lauriane pours the most of herself and her land.

Black Cardamom stands out as the boldest fragrance in the collection. It explores every facet of green cardamom—from the exhilarating freshness of the leaf to the depth of the seed—until it blends into a dark, sophisticated leather accord. A spicy, sensual skin scent that evokes the warmth of southern lands.

Eau Lithique is a captivating and powerful tribute to the mineral sap of the vine. The sensation of cold resin absorbed by the skin. A dense botanical essence, infused with the aromatic breath of eucalyptus, the saltiness of sea fennel, and frankincense resin derived from the sacred resin of Boswellia. A 60% “ Extrait de Parfum ”—an exceptional concentration that leaves a dense, satiny, and long-lasting scent on the skin, with infinite staying power and a trail of remarkable intensity.

Personal Profile: The Perfumer Behind the Bottle

Lauriane Guignon lives in a town in the Pays de Fayence, bordering the Pays de Grasse. The family estate cultivates 8,000 Centifolia rose bushes and 2.5 hectares of organically farmed vineyards. All the grapes are vinified on site.

It is here that everything is conceived. The laboratory adjoins the wine cellar. The perfume organ faces the rose fields. The creative process is not detached from the land—it is an extension of it.

Its commitment to the environment is not just a chapter tacked onto its narrative, but stems from the very nature of its craft. The Cépages bottles feature a cork cap made from scraps from the wine cork industry, supporting the circular economy.

The alcohol used in the formulations comes exclusively from vineyard byproducts, such as grape pomace and wine lees. No plastic film on the packaging. No transparent dropper tubes, to avoid polyfluoroalkyl pollutants.

The screen-printing of the bottles, the maceration, and the packaging are all done locally in the Grasse region. And every purchase contributes to the creation of the “Forêt des Cépages,” a project to plant cork oak trees designed to serve as a living carbon sink.

This harmony between agricultural practices, creative processes, and environmental stewardship is what sets Lauriane Guignon apart in an industry where “clean perfumery” is sometimes more of a label than a practice.

Why We’re Keeping a Close Eye on It

At SCENTISSIME, we select brands that have something to say and the means to prove it. Cépages Parfums checks both boxes.

What won us over was the complete lack of pretense. Lauriane Guignon doesn’t just tell a story about terroir—she lives it seven days a week. Her approach is rooted in agricultural reality: a vineyard, organic farming, and a seasonal calendar that shapes the creative process. In an industry sometimes saturated with storytelling, this sincerity has a recognizable scent.

The fragrances, too, deliver on their promise. Rich, textured, and designed to last, they perform on the skin just as great wines perform on the palate: with a bold opening, a complex development, and a lingering finish. These are fragrances born of conviction, not consensus.
