Marine Ipert, a clear line in the tumult of sensations

Marine Ipert works within Takasago’s Fine Fragrance studio, which she joined in 2023. Her journey took her from ISIPCA to IFF, then to Symrise’s international training program. She belongs to that generation of perfumers for whom technical mastery, visual culture, and an understanding of markets all go hand in hand. Yet her style bears a very personal imprint: that of a woman who has been drawing since childhood and who imagines perfumes in lines, volumes, textures, and colors.

The garden in front of the laboratory

Marine Ipert grew up in the south of France, between the sea and the mountains. There, the year unfolds to the rhythm of blooming flowers. Lavender gives way to mimosa, followed by jasmine, orange blossom, and rose. Her mother loved perfumes. Her father took care of the family garden. Even before knowing the names of molecules or the structure of an accord, she thus learned that scents have a season, a light, and a geography.

At thirteen, a meeting with a perfumer from Grasse gave a name to this fascination. The profession revealed itself to her with its share of science, patience, and creativity. The revelation came early, but the road would be long. Marine Ipert studied chemistry at university, then entered ISIPCA in 2010. There, she learned about formulation, toxicology, quality control, and the economic realities of perfumery. 

Above all, she discovered that a diploma opens the door to the laboratory without completing the learning of the craft.

She continued her training for two years at IFF, before joining Symrise’s internal school. In Holzminden, Germany, raw materials became a vocabulary to be learned with rigor. They had to be smelled, recognized, and understood in terms of their power, their nuances, and the way they transform in contact with other materials. “We learned the raw materials by heart so we could better recognize them when composing a fragrance,” she would later recall, comparing this learning process to a musician’s solfège.

This comparison says a great deal about the perfumer’s discipline. The freedom to compose is earned through repetition. The nose is trained, memory is built, and intuition is supported by thousands of trials. Marine Ipert’s training continued in Paris, where she worked notably alongside Aliénor Massenet.

Appointed junior perfumer at Symrise in 2015, she earned the title of perfumer in 2019 upon completing the program. These years allowed her to engage with European, Asian, and North American sensibilities. They taught her that a perfume is never created in a cultural vacuum. A freshness, a fruit, a clean note, or a gourmand accord does not evoke the same images everywhere. Understanding these differences does not mean applying a formula for each market. It requires knowing how to listen to what an era, a house, and an audience wish to express.

Composing with the eye

Before perfumery, there was drawing. Marine Ipert has practiced it since childhood and seems to have carried this need to organize space into the laboratory. She thinks about scents through their contours. Some draw a clear line, others spread like an ink stain, catch the light, or leave a texture on the skin.

This visual sensitivity probably explains her interest in fashion, design, and architecture, traces of which can be found in her way of formulating. Marine Ipert seeks readable, polished, precise constructions whose clarity retains an emotional density. Her work is therefore not based on accumulation. It aims for the right accord, the one that gives an immediately perceptible form to the intention.

What connects her creations lies in her taste for translation. A memory of cooking becomes a warm and cool vibration. A forest takes on an almost architectural verticality. A rock concert is transformed into smoke, tension, and heated skin. 

For Plisson 1808: noble and conquering scents

For Plisson 1808, Marine Ipert creates in 2026 Nobility of the Woods and The Time of Conquests. Two fragrances connected to the house’s French heritage and to the figure of Napoleon, two exercises in which history must remain alive on the skin.

Nobility of the Woods has the silent verticality of a forest. Pine, cedar, and hinoki draw their lines, while black pepper animates the shadows and benzoin softens the edges. The composition moves between grounding and elevation. It evokes standing wood, its resin, its grain, then that impression of cooler air one feels beneath the branches. The fragrance corresponds well to the way Marine Ipert conceives materials: each occupies a space, brings a direction, and alters the light of the whole.

The Time of Conquests explores another kind of authority. A citrus opening illuminates a restrained lavender, soon darkened by black tea, patchouli, and leather.

The classic fougère loses its ceremonial stiffness here. It becomes more fluid, more textured, infused with the elegant bitterness of tea. Marine Ipert thus inscribes heritage within a contemporary construction. The historical reference remains perceptible, but the fragrance retains the poise and clarity needed to belong to the present.

From a centuries-old house to the tumult of the stage

Marine Ipert’s perfumery also knows how to radically change scenery. For the "Subversive Scents" collection dedicated to the Rolling Stones, she created Satisfaction and Sticky Fingers. The brief leaves behind Mediterranean gardens and European forests to join the stage, the amplifiers, the crowd, and the lingering smell of a concert.

With Satisfaction, Takasago evokes an intense atmosphere tied to rebellion, smoke, adrenaline, and the energy of the audience. The creative challenge is to give substance to what, in music, belongs to rhythm and electricity. The fragrance must suggest the tension of a riff, the heat built up under the spotlights, and that slight harshness that lingers on clothes after the night.

Sticky Fingers focuses more on the group’s sensual presence, its confidence, and its power of fascination. These projects confirm Marine Ipert’s narrative flexibility. She knows how to leave contemplation behind to work with impact, moving from a vertical composition to a more carnal energy. The subject changes, but the instinct remains: to find the olfactory lines that make an image immediately tangible.

Perfume as a language of translation

Marine Ipert speaks of perfume as a power of evocation. A scent brings the past back into the present with sometimes disconcerting precision. It can conjure up a person, a room, or a season even before the mind has identified the memory. For the perfumer, composing means working with this capacity for displacement.

Her approach lies at the intersection of art and craft. Art provides the intention, the perspective, and the freedom to bring together distant worlds. The craft requires knowledge of materials, the stability of a formula, and dialogue with evaluators, laboratory technicians, and fragrance houses.

Marine Ipert does not cultivate the romantic image of the solitary nose surrounded by vials. On the contrary, she describes a collective practice, largely assisted by computers, nourished by exchange.
