Oud perfume, the precious wood of perfumery
Oud is a dark resin that forms in the wood of the aquilaria tree after the tree becomes infected. It is rare and expensive. Many perfumes use oud from plantations or synthetic accords.
The facets of oud
Oud is woody, smoky and balsamic, sometimes with an animalic or leathery touch. It has long been used in the East, in perfumery as well as in incense.
An oud perfume for men or for women
Oud is unisex. Its character depends on what surrounds it: paired with rose, it becomes rounder and more floral. With amber, spices or vanilla, it becomes warmer and more enveloping.
How to choose an oud-based perfume
For a first approach, choose an oud softened by rose, amber or vanilla. If you like intense perfumes, a drier, smokier oud gives a very present sillage.
