Our opinion: "Tobak opens with a dry, almost austere tobacco that immediately asserts its presence. Then warmth settles in, a discreet softness rounds the edges, without ever erasing the initial tension between the vegetal notes of vetiver and the animalic aspects of leather and musk. The leather appears subtly in the background, like the memory of a coat worn for a long time. The overall effect evokes a muted, intimate atmosphere, slightly retro.     The Fragrance

    Tobak is a dark, pointed yet comforting scent composed of sweet smoky notes of tobacco leaf, vetiver, and warm hints of cinnamon. The base is made up of animalic musks and leather ; careful now, you might just get addicted. *PHOTO DESCRIPTION* Maya’s older sister Anette with their grandad Martin in his apartment. Västerås, Sweden 1967. Martin was a stoker by trade, a conscientious objector and humanitarian at heart. An ode to the kindest of them all.

    Founded in 2016, Maya Njie Perfumes explores the intertwining of scents and memories in blends of high-quality artisanal perfumes.

    Extracted, filtered, and bottled, these are personal moments through which the wearer creates their own feelings, attachment, and significance. Maya Njie's perfumes are assembled like memories; scents that seek to capture the essence and preserve the spirit of the intimate and personal. Elusive moments and subtle details, those that would otherwise have escaped consciousness, are thus recalled.

    Maya's olfactory identity is inspired by her childhood, as well as intimate family photo archives dating back to the 1960s: the small Swedish holiday home surrounded by changing forests, visits to her grandparents in their sparsely furnished apartment on Sunday afternoons, her uncle Lars and aunt Erene's wedding.

    The Perfumer

    As a self-taught perfumer, Maya’s practice was developed through experimentation; the blending of raw materials with a variety of essential oils, aroma compounds and resins; nature and science combining in autobiographical fragrances.

    Maya’s olfactory identity draws inspiration from her upbringing, as well as an archive of intimate family photographs from the 1960s; the small Swedish summer house surrounded by mercurial forests, the visits to her grandparents’ sparsely furnished flat on Sunday afternoons, Uncle Lars' and Aunt Erene’s wedding.
