Yuri Gutsatz (1914-2005) left his mark on the history of perfumery by championing a simple idea: the perfumer is an author.
Born in Saint Petersburg and later settled in Paris, he worked for Roure before collaborating with several major houses. In 1975, he founded Le Jardin Retrouvé, often regarded as one of the first niche perfume houses created by an independent perfumer. There, he championed free creation, guided by emotion rather than marketing.
As co-founder of the Osmothèque in 1990, he also worked to preserve olfactory heritage. His manifesto, Perfumer, thy name is nobody, remains a reference for all those who advocate recognition for the creator.
