The brand

The German company J.F. Schwarzlose & Sohne was founded in 1856 by manufacturer of musical instruments Joachim Friedrich Schwarzlose, as a family pharmacy business for his sons. Over time, his sons created their own business, in addition to the family pharmacy in Markgrafenstrasse 9 in Berlin, namely the business of creating fragrances.

J.F. Schwarzlose became a purveyor to the royal and imperial courts, and was the only German luxury perfume house that was known worldwide.

Today, the brand reinterprets its legendary classics in a modern and timeless way, with fragrances as self-assured and extravagant as Berlin itself, designed in conjunction with perfumer Véronique Nyberg.

Everything is sustainably manufactured in Germany using raw materials sourced 100% from Europe.

The story

Founded in 1856 with the opening of its first store in Berlin, Schwarzlose quickly became a renowned perfumery. By 1878, it was an official supplier to the Prussian Royal Court, followed by an appointment to the German Imperial Court. in 1901, with exports reaching Europe, Asia, and Australia. A new factory opened in Moabit in 1902.

After the factory and stores were destroyed during World War II, the family rebuilt the business in 1947. Production was later divided by the Berlin Wall before the company temporarily closed in 1976.

In 2012, the brand was successfully revived, bringing its rich heritage into the modern era.

The founder

Lutz Herrmann, Creative Director of J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin, came across the Berlin brand J.F. Schwarzlose Söhne more than ten years ago. As a successful designer of perfume bottles, he is considered an expert in the perfumery business and was so impressed by the elegant simplicity of this traditional Berlin brand that his research deepened. The eventful history and early modernity of the German perfume manufacturer quickly convinced the art-historically versed creative to come up with a plan – together with two partners, he began to make every effort to revive this fine brand as J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin.

Why we selected J.F. Schwarzlose

"Berlin breathes inside every J.F. Schwarzlose bottle. The house is born in 1856, vanished in 1976 and returned in 2012 with the same original force. Their perfumes carry a quiet intensity, revealing their soul with time rather than at first glance. I love the way these creations balance elegance with raw emotion, capturing fleeting moments, memories and the unmistakable spirit of Berlin. Rausch burns like an electric night in the cellars of Moabit. 1A-33 moves like a pre-war sedan, citrus and white flowers up front. Leder 6 still lingers on the forearm hours later, eyes closed. Lovers of dense materials and true stories, this house is made for you."
