Sébastien Cresp: the art of not being your father

(c)DR

Sébastien Cresp was born into a family where people breathe perfume like others breathe air. His great-grandfather grew flowers in Grasse, and his father revolutionized perfumery by creating the gourmand family. Yet at 38, he refuses to be merely the heir to a dynasty. His creations for Kayali, Maison Margiela and Atelier Fragranze Milano bear his own signature, that of a perfumer who adds emotion to formula.

A childhood surrounded by molecules

Neuilly-sur-Seine, late 1980s. A child grows up surrounded by wipes and bottles. His father, Olivier Cresp, comes home at night with tests in his briefcase. No bedtime stories, or very few. Instead, olfactory notes. Fragrances in the making. As a family, we breathe in the essences, discuss the harmonies, deconstruct the pyramids.

Sébastien Cresp was born into this perfume-saturated atmosphere. His great-grandfather grew roses and jasmine in Grasse. His grandfather traded raw materials. His father revolutionized gourmet perfumery with Angel. The legacy weighs heavily. But the child observes, listens, learns. No questions asked. This olfactory world has always been his.

Today, at 38, Sébastien Cresp is senior perfumer at Atelier Fragranze Milano. He spent fifteen years with Firmenich before joining the Italian house in 2023. His career path resembles that of his father, but the creations bear his own signature.

Sébastien Cresp is the heir to a Grasse dynasty. Above all, he is the man who refuses to be just that.

The training of a modern nose

The Institut de Parfumerie de Grasse. Five years of apprenticeship. Sébastien learns the basics: recognizing five hundred raw materials with his eyes closed, understanding classic accords, mastering dosages. Then came the itinerant training courses. Geneva, London, Paris, Germany. Firmenich trains its apprentices by making them travel. Each city brings its own cultural references, different customers and particular requirements.

The young man speaks four languages fluently. French, English, Spanish and Italian. This linguistic fluency opens doors for him. Above all, it enables him to understand the cultural nuances that guide his creations. A perfume for Brazil won't smell the same as one for Dubai. Expectations vary. So do codes.

In 2008, Sébastien joined Firmenich as an apprentice. He works under his father, but also under other master perfumers. No special privileges. No easy way out. He spent years working on shampoos, shower gels and candles. Consumer products teach him rigor. A fine perfume can appeal to the elite. A shampoo must appeal to the greatest number without offending anyone.

Olivier Cresp is a demanding mentor. Direct, sometimes harsh. He wants his son to create the best perfumes possible. He suggests ingredients, criticizes bluntly, pushes for excellence. Sébastien learns patience. He understands that perfumers are humble, that they take negative feedback in stride. The first year, criticism hurt him. Then he toughens up. He grows up.

Sébastien Cresp's style is at the crossroads of several influences. He loves gourmet food, as befits his father's heritage. But he also strives for sophistication and purity. His creations play on contrasts. Hot against cold. Sweet versus spicy. Artificial versus natural.

Yum Pistachio Gelato, created in 2023 with Olivier Cresp for Kayali, illustrates this approach. The pistachio is sweet, not salty. The fragrance opens with an explosion of bergamot, roasted hazelnut and rum. The heart develops around whipped cream, marshmallow and cotton candy. Thirty-three formula modifications to arrive at the final result. There's nothing insignificant about that number. Each version corrects a detail, refines a harmony, seeks the perfect balance.

The fragrance went viral on social networks, launching a pistachio trend in perfumery worldwide. Some see it as too sweet, too young. Others praise its addictiveness, its ability to evoke a specific moment: enjoying a gelato in an Italian alleyway.

From the Garden, also created with his father for Maison Margiela in 2023, takes a different path. The fragrance reproduces the smell of a fresh tomato leaf. Green, sulfured, slightly bitter. The accord opens with green mandarin, develops around geranium and closes with patchouli. The idea comes from a memory Olivier shares with his son. The grandfather who used to make the little boy smell the plants in the garden. Then the father repeating the gesture with his own child. A transmission that becomes perfume.

Sébastien enjoys working on these projects with Olivier. They understand each other immediately. They confront their points of view head-on. The father suggests, the son experiments. Together, they create something that belongs to neither, but to both.

Collaborations that count

Fifteen years with Firmenich. Hundreds of projects. Fragrances for Bath & Body Works, Victoria's Secret, Natura, Oriflame. Sébastien works in all segments. The mass market teaches him simplicity. Prestige allows him to explore. He creates Confessions of a Rebel, an erotic fragrance that plays on temperature contrasts. He composes fragrances for Nissaba, Aerin and Adopt Parfums.

In 2023, he leaves Firmenich. His departure was not a rejection. It's a need for independence. He joins Atelier Fragranze Milano as senior perfumer and associate. The Italian house, founded in 2011 by Marco Maffei and Maurizio Cerizza, is positioned in the niche segment. Small staff, family atmosphere, creative freedom.

Sébastien settles in Cannes, his home town. He rediscovers the Côte d'Azur, the Mediterranean light and the proximity to Grasse. The move marked a break with the past. Gone were the hectic rhythms of Paris. Make way for a different balance.

At Atelier Fragranze Milano, he works on a variety of projects. Two singers, one Brazilian, the other Mexican, commission him to create personalized perfumes. One knows exactly what he wants. The other doesn't. Sébastien has to dig deep, understand the personality, extract buried tastes. The process takes time. Each creation becomes an olfactory portrait.

He also collaborates with Antoine Lie and Paolo Cerizza, two other in-house perfumers. The team is small but complementary. Each brings his or her own sensibility, experience and vision.

A changing vision of the profession

Sébastien Cresp sees perfumery evolving. Consumers are increasingly interested in the composition of fragrances, the origin of raw materials, the identity of designers. Mystery is fading. Transparency is essential. The perfumer is no longer an anonymous figure hidden behind a brand. He becomes a face, a name, a story.

This evolution pleases him. It enhances the value of the profession, puts the spotlight on the work of composition. But it also worries him. Artificial intelligence is making progress. Sébastien has tested software capable of generating a formula in thirty seconds. The result is correct. "Not great, but correct. Enough to make you think".

For the moment, it's the perfumer who adds the emotion. The formula isn't enough. You have to add soul, experience and memories. An algorithm doesn't know what it means to pick tomatoes in a garden in Grasse. It doesn't know what a roasted hazelnut smells like on a street in Rome. These sensory references, these cultural anchors, make all the difference.

Sébastien believes in perfume as a vector of emotion. Not just seduction or pleasure. Emotion in the broadest sense. A perfume has to tell a story. It must evoke a place, a moment, a sensation. It must create a link between the wearer and those who smell it.

This approach brings it closer to the niche perfume. The big brands impose commercial constraints. You have to please as many people as possible, shock no one, follow trends. Niche perfumes allow for audacity. You can create for 1% of consumers, as Olivier Cresp says about his AKRO FRAGRANCES brand. You can take risks, explore unexpected territory.

The man behind the bottle

Sébastien Cresp works methodically. In the morning, he chats with his colleagues. A chat over a cup of coffee allows him to unwind and share ideas. Then he opens his computer and consults his current projects. The formulas are now entered into a software program. Gone are the days of paper and calculators. A robot makes up 80% of the mixture. Assistants add the remaining 20%.

This automation takes nothing away from creativity. It just frees up time. Sébastien can concentrate on the essentials: the initial idea, the choice of raw materials, the quality of each ingredient. In two or three hours, the concept is fixed in his head. The rest is just adjustments, corrections, tests.

He never works with music. Unlike many of his colleagues, he needs silence to concentrate. One thing at a time. No distractions, no radio, no background noise.

Outside the laboratory, he maintains close ties with his family. His father remains his role model, even if he has chosen a different path. His sister Anaïs, architect and co-founder of the Akro brand alongside Olivier, is also part of a creative world. The Cresps talk perfume at the dinner table. They can't help it.

Sébastien sometimes worries about the future of the profession. Will robots one day replace it? Will consumers accept perfumes created by machines? He doesn't know. But he continues to compose with conviction. Emotion cannot be programmed. Memories cannot be automated. As long as there is room for the human in the formula, perfumers will have their place.
