From root to aldehyde: Suzy Le Helley's concise signature
(c)DR
Some fragrances are invented like images on waking: the smell of figs lingering in the kitchen, a salty mist along a shoreline, the caress of a leaf crumpled between two fingers. For Suzy Le Helley, olfactory memory often begins with these little everyday scenes - a plant detail, an unexpected accord - which become the first seeds of a composition. Now an active perfumer in SYMRISE's fine fragrances department and considered a rising star in the perfume world, she creates for international houses and, more rarely, niche brands, while cultivating an intimate, botanical relationship with raw materials.
Early inspirations
Suzy Le Helley grew up with a marked curiosity for plants and their fragrances: learning about the world came through the senses, before being theorized into formulas. Her passion for plants and botany goes back to childhood, influenced by time spent in the garden, notably with her grandmother.
Her professional training took her to ISIPCA, the leading perfumery school in Versailles, and then to Symrise's in-house school in Germany, where she studied both botany and the synthesis tools that broaden a nose's palette.
Her travels - from Canada to Sri Lanka, by way of Madagascar and Latin American countries - have nourished her notebook of scents: meetings with local producers, observation of terroirs, and collection of olfactory anecdotes that often recur in her compositions.
Her olfactory style
Suzy Le Helley's work is characterized by clear, concise writing: she favors short formulas, where each element plays a clear role in the perfume's narrative. This economy of ingredients doesn't mean stylistic reduction, but a demand for precision - choosing the ingredient that carries the emotion rather than piling on layers.
His technical obsessions include the controlled use of aldehydes (for their radiance) and the marriage of natural materials such as Madagascan vetiver with modern synthetics, to achieve new, immediate textures. In practice, this results in fragrances that open with a strong idea - a radiance, a fruity note, a floral facet - before evolving towards a woody or gourmand warmth.
Notable achievements
Suzy has collaborated with a number of houses and projects: she is behind launches for Frédéric Malle (notably the olfactory interpretation of Acne Studios, where she brings a modern touch to classic accords), but also on consumer and niche creations listed in specialized databases. Her ability to translate a brand identity - the "voice" of a house - into precise accords has earned her requests from a variety of creative teams, from artistic directors to the founders of independent brands. These collaborations reveal a dual skill: building a recognizable signature while remaining at the service of a precise brief.
Suzy Le Helley has designed three fragrances for JUDITH PARIS, each with its own distinct yet legible character: Col Rond plays the musky floral card - clean opening, "fresh linen" accord then a heart of jasmine supported by a base of musk and vetiver that leaves a clear imprint; Taille Haute reinterprets the rose in the style of the 80s, with a fruity freshness (calone, peach) that swings to a heart of freesia/rose then a modern amber and woody base (ambroxan, cedar, helvetolide); Créoles radiates juicy orange blossom - mandarin and neroli at the top, sambac jasmine and orange blossom at the heart, resting on a woody-musky trail that lends radiance to the composition
Each of these three "juices" embodies Suzy Le Helley's creative imprint and promises a truly personal signature on your skin - an invitation to discover them on SCENTISSIME.
Her vision of perfume
For Suzy Le Helley, perfume is a language: a means of conveying a sensory message with the rigor of a craftsman and the freedom of an author. She affirms that technique must be subordinate to emotion - synthetic and botanical mastery only makes sense if it serves an aesthetic and an intention. This stance is also reflected in her interest in the field: knowing the origins of fragrances, dialoguing with raw material collectors, and understanding the social and environmental impact of the industry.

The perfumer behind the bottles
In the laboratory and in the field, Suzy functions like an observer: camera in hand on her travels, olfactory notebook always ready, she notes impressions, textures and little stories that will then feed the composition. Outside work, her inclinations remain close to nature and botany - a way of maintaining direct contact with raw materials. She also spoke of the importance of mentors she met during her training: established perfumers such as Annick Ménardo and Maurice Roucel helped shape her outlook, without imposing a single style. This professional humility explains her taste for creative dialogue and collaboration.
Suzy Le Helley is also involved in fragrance research and reformulation in line with regulatory changes, as well as in the development of artificial intelligence applied to perfumery (Philyra project).
